Sleep is about more than simply getting enough rest so that you won’t be tired in the morning. Though feeling rested is an extremely important aspect of self-care, sleep is an opportunity to plan, dream, problem solve. When you have a problem and the old folks tell you to “sleep on it”, they are not saying that because you’re too tired right now to solve your problem. They are pointing to the miraculous insights that can happen while we sleep. What was confusing can, overnight, become clear. What seemed impossible can seem quite possible in the light of a new day. I can come to understand my emotions while I am asleep. I can come to know why I am angry or scared or sad and what I need to do about it.
